🔍 Why We Use Mild Steel Instead of Stainless Steel:

✅ Superior Heat Retention

Mild steel heats up faster and holds heat better than stainless. This means:

  • Faster coal ignition

  • More even and sustained heat

  • Better performance in high-temp cooks

Stainless steel tends to reflect heat, while mild steel absorbs and radiates it, giving you that consistent, powerful BBQ zone you want.

Ideal for Seasoning (Like a Cast Iron Pan)

Mild steel can be seasoned with oil to create a natural, non-stick and rust-resistant surface, much like cast iron cookware. Over time, it develops a tough, protective coating that:

  • Improves with use

  • Enhances flavor over time

  • Helps prevent rust when looked after properly

Stainless steel can't be seasoned the same way, and once it discolors or blisters under high heat, there's no going back.

Stronger and More Durable Under High Heat

Stainless can become brittle or warp under extreme or prolonged heat, especially thin, cheaper grades used in some BBQ accessories.
Our 2mm mild steel can handle repeated high-temp abuse — it’s less likely to warp or degrade like stainless-steel and is built to last years with proper care.

Cost-Effective Without Sacrificing Strength

High-quality stainless is expensive — and often unnecessary for outdoor cooking tools that don’t need corrosion resistance as their main feature.
Mild steel gives you:

  • Better performance for the price

  • More thickness, more durability

  • A BBQ tool that performs like commercial gear

🧼 Maintenance Is Easy:

  • Just like cast iron: apply a thin layer of cooking oil after use

  • Store dry and covered if possible

  • Season it well and it will only get better with age

🔥 Bottom Line:

Mild steel performs better, costs less, and lasts longer when treated right.
It’s what serious BBQers and pitmasters prefer — and it’s why we use it in our gear at Smokey BBQ Bits.

How to Easily Season Mild Steel BBQ Accessories

Seasoning mild steel is a simple and essential process to protect your BBQ accessories and enhance their longevity. Let's walk through why we use mild steel, the importance of seasoning, and how you can easily season your BBQ items like Kettle Cones, Charcoal Chimneys, and more.

Why Use Mild Steel Over Stainless Steel?

Mild steel is a great choice for BBQ accessories because it's cost-effective, durable, and can handle high temperatures. Unlike stainless steel, which is more resistant to rust but can sometimes have issues with heat retention, mild steel heats up quickly and evenly, making it ideal for grilling and smoking. The trade-off is that mild steel is more prone to rust, which is why seasoning is so important.

What is Seasoning and Why Is It Important?

Seasoning is a process where you apply a layer of oil to mild steel and heat it to create a protective coating. This not only prevents rust but also creates a natural non-stick surface that improves over time. Seasoning is crucial for BBQ accessories like Kettle Cones, Charcoal Chimneys, and Grill Baskets, as it helps keep them in great condition while you cook.

How to Easily Season Your Mild Steel BBQ Accessories

  1. Clean the Surface: Before seasoning, make sure your BBQ accessory is clean and free of any dust or oil. A quick wipe-down with a clean cloth will do the trick.

  2. Apply Oil: Use a high-smoke-point oil (like vegetable oil or flaxseed oil). Simply spray or wipe a thin layer of oil over the surface. Make sure to cover every part of the steel, including corners and edges.

  3. Heat It Up (If Possible): If your item can fit in the oven, preheat it to 200°C  (400°F) and bake the item upside down on a rack for about an hour. This will help the oil bond with the steel and form a protective layer.

  4. For Items You Can't Put in the Oven: If you can't bake your items (like the Kettle Cones, Charcoal Chimneys, Baskets, Rocket Stove, Fire Pits), don't worry! I personally season these products by simply spraying or wiping oil on them before use and after each use. After that, I place them in my Weber BBQ with hot coals. The heat from the coals helps to create the protective coating on the steel.

  5. Repeat as Needed: You can repeat the seasoning process as many times as you like to build up a stronger, more durable layer. Over time, your BBQ accessories will become more non-stick and resistant to rust.

Conclusion

Seasoning mild steel BBQ accessories is a simple yet effective way to extend their lifespan and improve cooking performance. Whether you're using a Weber Kettle Grill, Charcoal Chimney, or a Rocket Stove, proper seasoning ensures your items stay in top shape for many BBQ sessions to come. Don't forget to season your BBQ gear before and after each use to keep it protected and ready for the next cookout!

Why We Use Mild Steel Over Stainless Steel in Our BBQ Gear

At Smokey BBQ Bits, we don’t just build BBQ gear — we build tools that perform, last, and make your cook-up better. That’s why we choose thick Australian mild steel for products like our Charcoal Chimney, Kettle Cone, and Grill Tops. Here’s why it’s the ultimate choice over stainless steel:

🔥 Heat Performance That Matters

Mild Steel = Better Heat Retention

Mild steel absorbs and radiates heat more effectively than stainless steel. This means:

  • Faster coal ignition

  • More even cooking temperatures

  • Reliable performance in high-heat cooks

Stainless steel reflects more heat than it absorbs, often leading to uneven or less effective heat control.

🧂 Season It Like Cast Iron

Mild steel can be seasoned with cooking oil, creating a natural, non-stick, rust-resistant layer — just like your favorite cast iron pan. Over time, this protective layer gets better, making your gear more durable and enhancing the flavor of your cooks.

Stainless steel cannot be seasoned in the same way, and once discolored or heat-damaged, it’s difficult to restore.

💪 Built Tough for BBQ Abuse

Our 2-5mm thick mild steel is strong, rugged, and made to handle:

  • Repeated extreme heat

  • Heavy charcoal loads (up to 3.5kg+)

  • Long cooks without warping or cracking

Cheaper stainless steel BBQ tools often warp, crack, or become brittle when exposed to direct flames or intense heat.

💰 More Value, No Compromise

Quality stainless steel is costly — and often used where rust prevention is more important than heat performance. For BBQ tools, mild steel gives you better heat-handling at a better price. That means:

  • More material for your money

  • A tool that lasts with proper care

  • True BBQ function over shiny looks

🧼 Easy to Maintain

Looking after mild steel is simple:

  • Wipe or spray with oil after use

  • Store dry when not in use

  • Re-season as needed — it just gets better over time

🏆 Trusted by BBQ Legends

Used by legends like Schueys BBQ, The Smokin Beard, Jimmy's Charcoal Smoke & Grill and more — our mild steel gear is tested in real fire, not just the factory.

If you want gear that works harder, lasts longer, and gives better results — mild steel is the clear choice.
